Fast, affordable and always ‘first time right’
Since being founded in 1967, Holmatro has developed into a market leader in the development and manufacture of hydraulic rescue equipment.
Most molds are made of steel. At Promatrix we have been choosing aluminum for more than 25 years. Why is that?
Promatrix has been using aluminium for more than 25 years. In this blog, we’ll go into the advantages of aluminium moulds over steel moulds.
For companies looking to have series made of up to 5,000 to 10,000 units per year, aluminium moulds are a good option because they are more affordable than their steel counterparts. Manager of Engineering Rubin Klein explains the advantages of aluminium moulds.
‘Some people worry that aluminium might not be a suitable material for a mould, but their concerns are unwarranted. While steel moulds do have a longer lifespan because they are more wear-resistant, aluminium has many other great properties. To start with its main advantage: aluminium can be machined a lot faster than steel, because it is a softer material. As a result, fewer machine hours are needed, which obviously helps keep costs down.’
‘People tend to assume that aluminium moulds last considerably less than steel moulds because they wear out sooner, but many of them prove to have a lifespan of 50,000 shots or more. Aluminium also outperforms steel in terms of heat dissipation. ‘With our in-house aluminium moulds, we’ve seen that cooling is less important than for steel, and the benefits are clearly reflected in mould complexity, cost and cycle time.’
Promatrix has over 25 years of experience with aluminium moulds and extensive in-house knowledge. We produce mould parts quickly in order to keep the lead times as short as possible. When developing a new product, it may be necessary to make several tweaks to optimise the product, but because we are so quick on our feet, we can provide input on improving the product. This way, we can achieve the best end result together.
